Wigan only joined the Football League in 1978 and were in the fourth tier of English football as recently as 1997. But thanks to the backing of owner and sports retail tycoon Dave Whelan, Latics completed their meteoric rise to the Premier League in 2005. They slipped back to the Championship in 2013, play at the DW Stadium and are famous for their pies!
